• Colonized by English and Dutch in 1600’s
• Boer War was sparked by discovery of diamonds (early 1900’s)
• Afrikaners (Dutch Decedents) gained majority in the 1940’s
• They invented the apartheid as a means of social and economic control
• Initial oppression started in the 1940’s then grew into the “Grand Apartheid” in the 60’s
• The segregation went as far as to create individual countries for each race
• This resulted in the decolonization of nine million South Africans
• In 1960 there was an uprising against the government where people of “color” refused to carry their passes, government issued identification to people of color
• If the government felt threatened, they would declare a “state of emergency” where they could use tougher means of control to ensure their superiority. ]
• Within these emergencies individuals could be detained for no reason, and left to die in prison, more than 1,000 did
• These states of emergency were enforced until 1989
• The apartheid was very effective in oppressing the blacks, see table
